Offered by Northwest Neighbors Village. In the Nazi concentration camp of Theresienstadt, there were 20 or more talented composers who found ways to write and perform while imprisoned. They called themselves the New Music Studio and their music was saved under floorboards or passed along from prisoner to prisoner. This new music reflected life in the camp, sustained hope, provided spiritual and cultural resistance for both the prisoner composers and audience, and promised a future. Some of the music contained hidden messages or served as eye (or ear) witness to the horrors of the camp, or of the broken heart. Murry Sidlin will honor the work of these composers by sharing with us some recordings from Hours of Freedom: The Story of the Terezin Composer. He will also speak of what music means in the most desperate of times. Registration is required by 9/18 and limited to the first 100.

To Tell the Truth: The Life of a Foreign Correspondent with Lewis Simons. Offered by Chevy Chase at Home. What is it like to be a foreign correspondent, covering the most dramatic stories in some of the world’s most hostile places? How—and why—has the state of the American press changed in the last 20 years and what are the challenges facing journalists today? Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Lewis M. Simons will address these questions and more. Simons began his career in 1967 as a foreign correspondent for The Associated Press, at the height of the Vietnam War. He went on to international postings for The Washington Post, Time Magazine, and Knight-Ridder Newspapers. Simons has been a foreign correspondent and investigative journalist for half a century, reporting throughout Asia and the Middle East. He covered the Vietnam War, opened the world‘s eyes to the terror in Tiananmen Square, was expelled from India for revealing Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s abuses and saved the life of a teen-aged Tibetan monk.

Daughter of History Author Presentation by Holocaust Refugee Susan Suleiman Sponsored by Friendship Heights Neighbors Network. A photograph with faint writing on the back. A traveling chess set. A silver pin. In her new memoir, noted scholar and author Susan Rubin Suleiman uses such everyday objects and the memories they evoke to tell the story of her early life as a Holocaust refugee and American immigrant. In this coming-of-age story that probes the intergenerational complexities of immigrant families and the inevitability of loss, Susan looks to her own life as an example of how historical events shape our private lives. After the Nazis marched into Hungary in 1944, five-year old Susan learned to call herself by a Christian name, hiding with false papers in Budapest with her parents. While her relatives in the provinces would be among the 450,000 Hungarian Jews deported to Auschwitz, Susan‘s close family survived and even thrived in the years following the war. But when the Communist Party took over Hungary, Susan and her parents emigrated to Chicago by way of Vienna, Paris, Haiti, and New York. In her adult life as a prominent feminist professor, she rarely allowed herself to think about these chapters of her past--but eventually, when she had children of her own, she found herself called back to Budapest, unlocking memories that would change the direction of her scholarship and career.
