HOW TO USE YOUR FREE TIME DURING THE PANDEMIC

Linda Wiesman | Published on 7/13/2020

Our lives have been deeply uprooted by this pandemic.  We used to shop regularly, visit friends and family, and travel to interesting places. But the fear of getting this virus has forced us to change the way we live.  Instead of going to the grocery store, we have food items delivered to our doorsteps.  Rather than purchasing clothes at a department store, we order them online and have them mailed to our homes.  And our visits to the doctor’s office have been replaced with tele visits.  For most of us, it means a lot of free time on our hands.

Fortunately, there is a wonderful solution to this problem.  It’s called volunteering for the Village at Kentlands and Lakelands.

The Village is a nonprofit organization that helps community seniors age in place as well as feel socially connected. Volunteer residents of the Kentlands and Lakelands help accomplish our goals by driving members to medical appointments and other places, doing minor home chores, and assisting with technology.

The Village also sponsors virtual concerts and lectures and arranges for virtual tours of art exhibits and museums.  We find there is an endless choice of information available on the internet.

In spite of Covid -19, requests for our services continue, with proper protocols in place.  Also, many still have a strong interest in our virtual events.  We have a growing need for people like you who are willing to help in the following areas:

  • Organize a virtual concert
  • Create a lecture series using experts from our community
  • Do research for our monthly newsletter
  • Write articles for Views from the Village
  • Organize small interest groups that would meet virtually on specific topics (e.g., chess, Mah Jong, meditation, yoga, or learning a craft)
  • Help with fundraising
  • Join one of our Village committees

We don’t expect you to do it all, but we’d love to hear your ideas and have your help.  You can get involved as much or as little as you want with the Village.  If you have free time, we have a way for you to use it.  Please call us at 301-275-3199 or send us an email to lindanatale@aol.com.
