Presented by North Bethesda Village. Around 1700, artists in Udaipur (a court in northwest India) started to create highly detailed paintings expressing scenes and moods (bhava) of the city’s palaces, lakes, and mountains. These large works and their emphasis on lived experiences represented a new direction in Indian painting and reveal the environmental, political, and emotional contexts in which the new art form emerged.
