In the fall of 2014, a group of Kentlands neighbors began to meet on a regular basis and plan the development of a Village at Kentlands. The neighborhood group became the Village Planning Committee and gained the support and sponsorship of The Kentlands Community Foundation. We knew that the values that make our neighborhood a special place place to live and to thrive in – community, friendship, inclusiveness and service – could make a Village successful as well.
The committee wanted to ensure that the Village at Kentlands would be accepted and responsive to its resident’s needs, so in 2015 we conducted a resident survey. The enthusiastic results supported the need and interest in developing a Village. Based on the survey, it was decided the Village would provide transportation, social visits, help with minor chores and conducting errands, and referral to service providers. It was also decided that members, initially, will include people aged 55 and over and anyone with disabilities regardless of age. In 2017, the Village expanded to include our neighbors in Lakelands and was renamed, The Village at Kentlands & Lakelands.
Villages are membership programs. Our pilot program is free to members and we invite their participation.
